Professional certification programs in fisheries and wildlife

Students on excursion
NAUFWP supports the professional development of all its members and encourages certification where appropriate for career advancement, validation, or benchmark standards necessary for employment.  Typically, certification recognizes that a minimum educational, experience or ethical standards have been met by the candidate.  Federal, state or NGOs may have different standards and these should be investigated by individuals interested in certification.

Our members come from a wide variety of backgrounds and areas of specialty as well as participate in a suite of different Society organizations; thus, NAUFWP does not endorse any specific certifications, nor do we suggest they are necessary for employment.  However, the majority of our members typically belong to one or both of the American Fisheries Society and The Wildlife Society, and our member institutions often consider the certification programs from these two societies when designing curricula. Certification is also offered by the Ecological Society of America, and the Society of Wetland Scientists, which may provide benefits to many fisheries and wildlife scientists. Additionally, the Society of American Foresters accredits college majors rather than certifies individuals, and again may have relevance to some fisheries and wildlife career paths.

We provide links to four of these certification programs for more information on the process of certification within these organizations.
